About antigone
Antigone is a tragedy written by an ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles in or before 440 BC. The play picks up where Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes ends.
The play begins with the chorus introducing the characters and describing past events. When Oedipus died it was agreed that his two sons, Eteocles and Polynices, would alternate the throne every year. When Eteocles refused to step down at the end of his term, Polynices and his supporters attacked and both the brothers died. Creon then became the king and ordered Eteocles to be buried but not Polynices.
Antigone, the main character and daughter of Oedipus, decided to take action. She buries her brother, Polynices, even with her sister’s disapproval. Later that day a guard finds Polynices’s body and tells Creon the news. Creon has the guard arrest Antigone and bring her in. Once she arrives, she and Creon get into an argument that ends with Creon sentencing Antigone to death. Antigone is then put into jail as she awaits her death. After she is immured, Creon changes his mind but is too late. Antigone had already hung herself. After hearing the news, Haemon, her lover, stabs himself and dies beside her. Haemon’s death causes Eurydice to slit her throat leaving Creon the last one standing to live with this tragedy on his shoulders.

Design Setting
The play takes place in Santillana del Mar located in Canatbria, Spain. It’s an old town with a lot of history, art, and architecture making it a lively and interesting village. Even though the play is set with a Greek background Spain’s architecture is similar to Greece giving it more of an authentic feel. Conveniently located nearby are a couple caves, one being the famous Cave of Altamira. The Cave of Altamira contains some of the most famous prehistoric paintings and is known as the Sistine Chapel of cave art.
This location is perfect for Antigone. Antigone takes place mainly outside in Greece and with Spain's Greek look the audience will get the best of both worlds, Spain and Greece. There isn’t a lot of new infrastructure and the old roads and buildings give a more authentic feel to the play. There is also a cave in the play and with the Cave of Altamira nearby, it allows for a cave to be used in the play. The cave’s art will also be a nice eye pleaser for those who come!
